WARNING: Prisoner Release
The holidays are coming and it’s time to celebrate with family and friends. Despite the coronavirus woes, students still get to enjoy vacation from school and employees still get their 13th month salary. But did you know that prisoners get rewarded around the holidays too?
We’re not talking about your friendly game of Monopoly. This is a real life get out of jail card for actual prisoners.
Every year, several states in Brazil announce dates for an event known as saídão or the big exit. As contemplated by Law 7.210/84, select prisoners are released to spend the holidays with their families. It’s common around Christmas as well as Mother's Day and Father's Day.
According to a security alert from the US Embassy, it’s not unusual for crime to go up during these times. The alert specifically references possible increases in theft, assault and burglary while warning people to use caution and remain vigilant.
While it may sound scary, in reality, the saídão is a form of temporary release given to prisoners for good behavior. Generally, they’re already part of the semi-open regime and work outside the prison during the day or have been released temporarily in the past. In addition, they must comply with the conditions set by a local judge and are subject to unannounced check-ins from prison officials.
So go ahead and enjoy your holidays. Just stay aware of your surroundings as you would normally, and get in touch with the Embassy in the case of an emergency.
