The Advantages of Getting Older in Brazil
Getting older has its benefits. At least it does in Brazil. In fact, a federal law ensures that seniors receive a number of rights and privileges, offering protection and the opportunity to enjoy a higher quality of life.
People of advanced age in Brazil often get priority. In banks, they get to bypass the regular line for a shorter, expedited one. The same is often true at grocery stores and pharmacies. Hospitals, for example, also give preferential treatment to seniors, reducing their wait time significantly.
Public transportation is another area where they enjoy the preference. Buses and metro systems not only reserve seats specifically for the elderly but also allow them to ride for free. They even get free medication and may be exempt from paying the annual property tax (IPTU).
And now, the benefits of getting older are extending to air travel.
The federal government recently launched the first phase of the Voa Brasil program. The goal is to give senior citizens an opportunity to fly within the country while helping airlines reduce the rate of empty seats at the same time.
Those who qualify can buy up to two one-way tickets with prices capped at BRL$200 (about US$35) per leg. Currently, three million airplane tickets are available exclusively for national social security retirees (INSS) who haven’t traveled by plane in the last 12 months.
With all these benefits, Brazil offers a compelling option for those looking to enjoy their golden years. It’s a place where seniors are valued and well-cared for.
