Make Sure You Visit the “Right” Brazilian Consulate

Occasionally, you may need to visit a Brazilian Consulate in the US. Perhaps you need to apply for a visa, or you’ve decided you want a taxpayer ID number. So you head to the nearest Consulate, right? Well, not necessarily.

Each Brazilian Consulate has a particular jurisdiction. Just because a Consulate is geographically closest to where you live doesn’t mean you can visit that Consulate. Take Ohio, for example. Chicago may be the closest Consulate, but actually, the Consulate in Washington, DC has jurisdiction over Ohio residents.

What does this mean exactly? It means you might not get the help you need from a Consulate if you don’t live in its jurisdiction. And you might think twice about simply showing up in Chicago, for example, when you live in Ohio because they might just turn you away.
