Fly to Brazil Visa Free

It’s true - US passport holders can fly to Brazil for tourism without a visa. No more long lines at the Brazilian Consulate; no more waiting for the visa to be ready for pickup; and no more hefty fees. It’s now easier than ever to travel to Brazil.

For years, Brazil required that visitors from the US get a visa from a Brazilian Consulate. It was costly (US$160), time-consuming, and (for some) a bureaucratic mess. But who could complain? Even today, Brazilians pay US$160 for a US visa and, besides extensive paperwork, must interview at a US Consulate.

In 2017, the Brazilian government made its first significant change. It announced an e-Visa program where US passport holders (and others) traveling for leisure and business could apply online for a two-year visa. The cost - US$40. It was simple: no appointments; no lines; and you’d have your visa within days.

But apparently, that wasn’t easy enough. Brazil wanted to make it even easier for US visitors. So, in 2019, Brazil changed the rules yet again. This time, they waived the visa requirement altogether.

The new law allows Americans (along with Canadians, Australians, and Japanese) to visit Brazil without a visa for 90 days with the ability to extend to 180 days. The goal: to increase tourism by making it easier for foreign travelers. And it seems to be working. According to Brazil’s official tourism agency, travel by Americans to Brazil is up 39% since the change.
