Brazil’s Digital Nomad Visa
In 2021, Brazil joined a growing list of countries offering digital nomads the opportunity to live and work remotely. Today, more than 50 countries offer a digital nomad visa. Brazil’s version of the visa is valid for one year and can be renewed for an additional year.
To qualify, you can’t be employed by a Brazilian company. The goal isn’t to take away jobs from locals. Instead, it’s to allow foreigners with flexible jobs the right to work from Brazil if they want. Beyond the foreign employer requirement, you must earn at least US$1,500 per month from a foreign source or have a minimum of US$18,000 in savings.
Immigration Resolution 45/2021 sets forth a list of requirements for the digital nomad visa. These include documents you’d normally need when applying for any Brazilian visa, such as a completed application, a valid passport, birth certificate, health insurance, and a criminal background report.
Specifically for the digital nomad visa, you must also provide a copy of your employment or services agreement with your foreign employer. After all, this document is crucial to prove your eligibility for the visa.
It’s important to note that even if your visa is valid for a year, it doesn’t mean you can live in Brazil tax free. If you stay in Brazil for 184 days or more within any 12-month period, you’ll be considered a resident for tax purposes. And if you’re a US citizen, you’ll still need to file US taxes too.
