Brazil Cancels Major Events Due to Coronavirus
Every year, thousands of NASCAR fans flock to São Paulo for the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix. In Rio, millions gather to celebrate New Year’s Eve on the beach. These two major events alone have a significant impact on Brazil’s economy. But now, all of this is about to change.
As a result of the COVID crisis, the F1 race was canceled for 2020. New Year’s Eve celebrations in Copacabana and on Paulista Avenue were also canceled. And São Paulo city announced that it was postponing Carnaval until May 2021.
Brazil has seen a sharp increase in COVID cases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Brazil is trailing only to the United States in total cases and will soon reach 100,000 deaths. Even the country’s president has tested positive for the virus.
Currently, foreigners are banned from entering Brazil. There are a few exceptions, though. For example, permanent residents and foreigners visiting for business are welcome. Just don’t forget your doctor’s note as all international travelers must present a declaration from a medical professional that they don’t have COVID. The specifics are in Portaria 340, which remains in effect until July 29.
Unfortunately, this is likely just the beginning. It’s safe to assume that we’ll see more events canceled and continuing restrictions on travel. If you decide to travel to Brazil soon, just make sure you’re up to speed on any travel restrictions as the guidance is continuously evolving.
